Douglas Apple, MD is the former Chief Medical Officer for Spectrum Health located in Grand Rapids, MI. Spectrum is a 5 billion dollar health care system located in western Michigan.

Doug provides details of his growing interest in medicine as a career during the first semester of his freshman year at Grand Valley State University while pursuing a degree in accounting.

Doug attended Saba University in the Dutch West Indies, returning to the US to complete his clinical rotations.

After completing his residency in Grand Rapids, Doug accepted a position as a hospitalist with Spectrum Health. He accepted larger and larger administrative responsibilities that culminated in his promotion to the Chief Medical officer of the Spectrum Health Medical Group and then Chief Medical Officer for the entire delivery system, Hospital and Medical Group.

During the interview we focus on the importance of developing physician leaders in healthcare organizations. Doug discusses the types of knowledge he feels is important to provide to new physician leaders and the approaches used to develop leaders in a large healthcare organization.

Doug also discusses the importance of mentorship to young physicians or physicians new to non-clinical leadership positions.
